12/9/24 Where to get Tennis Lessons in RI?

I live in Barrington Rhode Island, but I teach or have taught in many places in Rhode Island: Barrington, Newport, Bristol, East Providence, Providence, Portsmouth etc. I would love to help you find tennis lessons whether it is with me or with other pros that I know and work with. There are plenty of options. It is obviously easier and less expensive from April to November to get lessons outdoors, but there are a few indoor clubs in Rhode Island where you can get lessons and play throughout the year.

Budget for lessons in Rhode Island

Private lessons in Rhode Island will run from around $50 to $100 on outdoor courts and between $80 and $180 on indoor courts per hour. Semi-private or 3-person lessons are a great way to share some of the cost of a lesson. Rhode Island has a great tennis playing community, with many tennis courts, clubs, and facilities spread across the state offering lessons for all skill levels. Here are some top places where you can find tennis lessons:

  • Barrington, RI
There are various public courts in Barrington. I teach at the high school and the middle school, as both have lights and are ok to use as long as not during school hours. There are a couple of other courts I use, but shhh, I’m not advertising them here lol.
  • Newport, RI
I have taught at the Hall of Fame tennis club, 401-849-4777, an historical landmark, between 2020 and 2022, and at various outdoor courts in Newport, both privately and as the pro for Newport Recreation department, 401-845-5800. • Tennis Rhode Island, East Bay – 401-434-5550
Steve Sapolsky is the head pro and Mike Silva is the manager of this lovely club, where I have played for years, and taught various classes for Steve for the last 4 years as well as holding group classes there over the winter. There are a number of great pros who teach here.
  • Centre Court Tennis Club, Riverside – 401-437-1210
I used to teach here, but they now do not allow coaches who do not work for the club to book courts. Jeff Cote is a great coach still working for them who trains elite players. All others have been shadow banned as far as I know, but you could always try here.
  • Portsmouth
This year I started teaching for Portsmouth’s Recreation Department doing a range of lessons for different age groups and levels at Portsmouth High School. Visit their website to be notified of upcoming lessons in 2025.

Other places to play: There are many courts that I can’t list here, but indoor courts that I play at but have not taught at include Rally Point in Smithfield (401-949-0320), Tennis Rhode Island West Bay (401-828-4450), and Forecourt Tennis Club in Cumberland (401-333-4480).

Help me to help you!

There are a lot of coaches in Rhode Island and each are distinctly different in their approach, teaching style and experience. I have been teaching since 2015 unofficially, and since 2018 officially. Frankly I only learned to play in 2012. Before you run away and decide that you need someone more experienced to help you, here’s why I think that I am the right coach for kids lessons, teen classes, and recreational and social players of all levels up to advanced intermediate.

  • #1 – I still remember all of my lessons, what worked, what doesn’t, the frustration and the joy of hitting a ball correctly, wanting to repeat it x100.
  • #2 – I am more motivated to get you playing and playing well, because I was NOT the best player in high school or college and have more to prove!
  • #3 – I play as often as I can, as I am generally my happiest on a tennis court. I win some and lose some at my level, but I am always trying to improve my own game, which helps me to improve yours. I see a shot that is working for someone else, and work at it until I get it, and then I teach it to you!
  • #4 – Athough kids and teens that I have taught have gone on to do well competitively with elite coaches, my aim is to have you having fun on a court as soon as possible. I want you to have as much fun playing as I do.

I personalize each lesson to ensure that you get a good understanding and technique for the basics (forehand, backhand, volley, serve). Once the basics are covered, lessons then start to include more advanced shots (lobs, deep balls, approach balls, drop shots and spin). I am quite flexible to find times that suit you for lessons and I have a very simple price structure for outdoor lessons (indoor lessons vary, depending on the court and time).

Outdoor Lesson Cost for 2025

  • Private Lesson – 1 hour $54
  • Semi Private: – 1 hour $30pp ($60 total)
  • 3 Player Lesson – 1 hour $25pp ($75 total)
  • 4 Player Lesson – 1 hour $20pp ($80 total)
