From Technique to Tactics

In adult tennis lessons, the focus is on helping you master the core skills every player needs to succeed. We’ll work on refining your technique and form while developing the instinct to know which moves and hits to use in different situations. Through targeted drills, you’ll practice tracking the ball, executing precise shots, and making smart strategic plays.

A typical beginner’s lesson
For brand new players, your first lesson will focus on the forehand, backhand and a beginner serve. Learning the right technique will save a lot of pain down the road. An incorrect technique can lead to tennis elbow or tendonitis, which are easily avoided with good form.

Sometimes it’s possible to add in another type of shot or two, but you will want to get these basics down first. I also show you a few small drills you can do by yourself, in your garage or garden that will just take a couple of minutes a day and will ensure that you improve in between lessons. You will not get any grief from me if you don’t do your homework – life is busy so no pressure.

Once you are able to get the 3 initial shots with some consistency and movement on court, we will introduce the volley and half volley in subsequent lessons which will round off your game. You will be able to practice what you learn in the last 15 to 20 minutes of each class with some easy play.

Intermediate Players example lesson
A typical lesson for an intermediate player will start with the short (close to net) warm up to get the feet moving and to practice a range of controlled strokes; topspin, slices, volleys and half volleys. When warm they will move to the baseline to practice forehands and backhands, before doing drills with stroke combinations, applying a good basic footwork technique.

We spend a few minutes at least on improving at least one aspect of the serve. Depending on the skill of the player more shots can be incorporated if desired, such as lobs, drop shots, or combinations which will increase your winning odds in matches. Again, the last section of the class will be focused on putting everything together for some challenging play, both offensive and defensive.

Each lesson is different depending on the player and what they want to focus on. Sometimes it is necessary to correct bad form that has developed over years of playing before instruction which may feel like regression, but we discuss the pros and cons of making changes and it will ultimately be up to the player.
